Projects, Preservation & Partnerships

Three of LHF's largest projects to date are the restoration of the Miller Claytor House, the recovery and preservation of the Packet Boat Marshall, and our ongoing Oral History Project.

The Miller Claytor House is Lynchburg's last remaining 18th Century home. Originally built in 1791 on 8th and Church Streets, it was the home of tavern owner John Miller and his wife Mary. In 1935, the home had fallen into disrepair and was at risk of demolition. So, it was carefully taken down, and reconstructed in 1936 where it stands today at the entrance of Riverside Park. In 1976 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2004 LHF undertook a major restoration project to restore the home to it's original color and appearance. Today, it is maintained by LHF and is available to rent for intimate gatherings and events.

The Packet Boat Marshall was commissioned in the summer of 1861 to carry mail, supplies and passengers up and down the James River via the Kanawha Canal. It saw warfare and sustained damage during Hunter's Raid, and remained in operation until it was decommissioned in 1880. But its real claim to fame was its role in transporting Stonewall Jackson's body from Lynchburg to Lexington for burial in 1863. From 2003 - 2006, LHF worked to restore the iron hull, and provide a protective covering to keep it safe from the weather.

Oral History is essential to the preservation of our shared past. In fact, the richest stories are often the ones not published in a newspaper, but passed down from generations. LHF works to preserve these stories through recording and digital preservation. If you know someone who may be interested in sharing stories from their life growing up in Lynchburg or the area, please let us know!
